“Oh, Deion, isn’t the tropical sunrise wonderful?” Peering out the taxicab window, Roxanne’s face radiated an inspiring Mediterranean look of her own.

“Breathtaking, its beauty is only diminished by yours.”

“That’s really sweet.” She turned toward him. “I’m glad you invited me.”

Deion fondled her fingers and nails and almost lost himself in the sparkle of her eyes. “Babygirl, I didn’t know of a better way of demonstrating to you how much you mean to me. I couldn’t let Frances DaPrato destroy the magic between you and I.”

“Deion, initially, after seeing you again, I only wanted to be friends. But as I began thinking about the life we had shared, I realized that a part of me wanted very much to give us another chance.”

Deion looked wily at her. “Is that why you wanted to discuss Jamal this morning?”

Silence lingered in the air for almost five seconds. “There’s a part of me,” she finally said, “that loves him too.”

Immediately his inviting face transformed into a face of an unpleased man. It seemed almost possible to peel the emotional makeup from his face. “So, what are you doing here with me?”

“There’s no easy way to say this.” Oh God! I hope he doesn’t become unglued and dumps me out on the streets. “Traveling with you here has enabled me to ...to check up on him.”

“Him who?”

“Jamal.”

“What? Ain’t this a bitch. Played like a mark.” He brushed his right palm across the top of his head and fixed his dark-black eyes on hers. “Is this your way of getting even?”

“No, believe me, baby. Jamal’s on assignment here in Barcelona.”

“So, this is why you’re so anxious to get to the Marbella Playa Hotel?”

“I tried to tell you, but you—”

“How long have you known he’d be in Barcelona?”

They stared at each other for almost 60 seconds. He felt the rage to slap the taste out of her deceptive mouth swelling up inside of him, like a volcano ready to erupt. She wondered if the emotions she seen in his eyes meant he would manhandle her as she uttered words describing the extent to which he’d been played. She spoke softly and braced herself.

“Before you asked me to come along.”

In all the years he’d known her, he’d never actually beat her, though on occasion he’d manhandled her when she attempted to get physical. Figured the thing to do now was gaining control of the situation.

“What about the love we made this morning? Was it a part of your trickery too?”

It seemed like Deion’s eyes were genuinely filled with grief. “Baby, it was real. I’m just confused.”

“Confused? I’m the one who’s confused.” He wanted to hurdle every profane word he could think of at her. But, instead, he manned up and spoke softly. “Here I am putting my life on the line so we can spend the rest of our lives together. And then you suddenly tell me that you’ve traveled with me just so you can check on Jamal. And to top it off, I’m supposed to be cool with everything since we fucked.
